Optimizing Onboarding in

Accounting careers

An experience that allowed me to truly understand what my field does on a daily bases. It also crucially taught me how to navigate such an environment.

BUS-A380

This course gave me insight into what being an accountant is actually like in the real world. While it's fair to say that the course contributed to that experience, it was really the company I interned at that made the biggest impact! The course provided direction on what I needed to accomplish and helped me present the required PDF to the professor and the company's directors.

I worked on tax returns, coordinated with multiple people across various fields, and participated in projects that made a difference within the company. This experience taught me what my job as a tax accountant would entail—how to communicate with different people and departments. I also learned how to network and socialize with my coworkers, which didn’t come naturally to me at first. This internship broadened my understanding of what’s ahead in my career.

I've also recently realized that without this experience on my resume, landing a full-time job would have been much harder. During interviews, I was asked the most about my internship, with recruiters focusing heavily on it, while my leadership positions were more of a nice bonus.

I believe everyone should have the opportunity to do something similar to the internship I completed, as it’s incredibly helpful in determining if this major is the right fit. It’s also great to have on your resume, proving that you have the necessary experience to do the job more efficiently. Looking back, I never fully appreciated what an opportunity this course was until now, and I’m forever grateful for how it all worked out.
